Maui County officials issued a final environmental assessment and finding of no significant impact for a $6 million project to install 5,800 feet of sewer lines and replace aging waterlines for approximately 100 lots in Waikapū.

The updated rules follow the Maui County Council’s approval of Bill 158 in January, which amends the County Water Code to address water waste, promote responsible water use and ensure a reliable and sustainable water supply.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2026, in accordance with Ordinance 5759 adopted by the Maui County Council, the County of Maui Department of Water Supply (DWS) will implement a new method for projecting water demand and sizing water meters that focuses on daily water usage instead of the Hunter Curve Method, which was based on the number of plumbing fixtures—such as toilets or showers—in a building. The Maui Department of Water Supply on Friday announced a Stage 3 water shortage for consumers in the Upcountry Maui service area, requiring the implementation of mandatory and strict water conservation measures.

As part of their quarterly “Manaʻo on The Mountain” Community Potluck series, Kula-based nonprofit, Mālama Kula, will be hosting Department of Water Supply Chief Engineer James Jensen, for an Oct. 22 discussion on Upcountryʻs water system, and where Kula gets its water from.

Council Vice-Chair Yuki Lei Sugimura announced today that two community meetings focused on Upcountry water source development will be held on Thursday, Oct. 9, and Tuesday, Oct. 28, both beginning at 6 p.m. at the Hannibal Tavares Community Center in Pukalani.

The Department of Water Supply reports a scheduled water service outage in Kīhei scheduled today, May 7, 2025 from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. affecting Lipoa Parkway. During this time, Wailea may experience low water pressure.

County of Maui Department of Water Supply is continuing its community meetings on the future of Maui island’s drinking water supply with six in-person events in May. DWS is partnering with national nonprofit US Water Alliance to facilitate the meetings, which will help shape Maui’s water future.

Anticipated completion time has been extended to Monday, April 28, 2025, at 12 p.m.

The shutdown will affect services on Lower Honoapiʻilani Road from Bay Club Place including Hui Drive and Hui Road.
