The Hawaiʻi State Legislature on Thursday announced funding decisions for the Act 310, Session Laws of Hawaiʻi 2025 Nonprofit Grants Program, awarding $50 million to support nonprofits impacted by recent federal funding delays and reductions.

Nareit Hawaiʻi has awarded $120,000 in grants to five nonprofit organizations across the state to support community programs and food assistance efforts on Oʻahu, Maui, Hawaiʻi Island and Kauaʻi, according to an announcement Tuesday.

The Maui Food Bank will hold three drive-thru food distributions for residents affected by the recent government shutdown.

Through charitable shipping contributions valued at more than $1.55 million, Matson has donated freight services to transport 156 shipping containers carrying food and essential supplies to Maui since 2022, thereby making it one of Maui Food Bank’s largest and most impactful partners.

“On Maui, 41% of households are food insecure, a 10-point increase from last year,” said Maui Food Bank CEO Lisa Paulson. “The lingering effects of the Lahaina fires, combined with SNAP cuts and the government shutdown, continue to place extraordinary strain on our community. These findings shine a spotlight on the urgent need for continued investment, compassion, and collaboration to ensure no one in Maui County goes hungry.”

In collaboration with the Maui Food Bank, eight Maui Rotary clubs will collect non-perishable food items and cash donations for the Maui Food Bank. The drive is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 15, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Donations of food and funds will help provide safe and nutritious food to anyone in Maui County who is at risk of going hungry.

Hawaiʻi State Federal Credit Union announced that it will donate $50,000 to support local food banks and pantries as families across the state face growing food insecurity caused by the ongoing federal government shutdown and the reduction of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.

Maui Food Bank reports a steady upward trend in food distribution over the past three months as community need continues to grow. The organization distributed 537,996 pounds of food in October, an 18% increase since August, and expects demand to surge by another 35% in the coming weeks due to the approaching holidays and the ongoing federal government shutdown.

In response to the ongoing federal shutdown and disruptions to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the State of Hawaiʻi has launched the Kōkua Food Drive, a weeklong food collection campaign beginning today in partnership with the Hawaiʻi State Public Library System to support food banks across the islands.

Hawaiʻi State Federal Credit Union employees raised $51,370 for local nonprofits through two fundraising initiatives held earlier this year, according to an announcement this week.
