The 24th annual Maui Matsuri named NAPA – United Auto Parts and Restaurant Matsu as this year’s Business Award recipients for their commitment to the community, which has been a reflection of core values passed down through generations.

The Japanese Cultural Society of Maui successfully hosted the 24th Annual Maui Matsuri Japanese Festival, May 23, at the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College, bringing together the Maui community for a vibrant celebration of Japanese culture, tradition and friendship.

The Japanese Cultural Society of Maui will host the 24th annual Maui Matsuri across two events this month at the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College, beginning with a Children’s Festival on Saturday, followed by the Japanese Festival on May 23.

The deadline to submit artwork for the annual Maui Matsuri Art Contest has been extended to April 16. The Maui Matsuri Art Contest – sponsored by HouseMart Ben Franklin Crafts Maui – is for eligible students who can win up to $100 in cash prizes.

Mise Kimono, which offers modern Japanese fashions with a touch of Hawaii influence, will celebrate its second anniversary at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center with a “Mise Matsuri” on March 3.

The Maui Matsuri Festival celebrated its 21st year at the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College campus on Saturday with saimin and natto eating contests, cosplay, taiko drum performances, food and craft vendors, cultural exhibitions and the iconic Community Obon Dance finale.

Maui Matsuri returns to the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College on Saturday, May 27 from 3 to 9 p.m., and will kick-off this Saturday, May 20 with Children’s Day at the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

With JCSM pushing back the 2021 Maui Matsuri Festival from May to November last year, and many participating organizations still regaining their pre-pandemic capacities, the decision was made to honor the perpetual theme of the Matsuri – Kodomo No Tame Ni (For the Sake of the Children) – and focus on a one-day event for children.
