Winners of the 2025 Maui Matsuri Art Contest, sponsored by HouseMart Ben Franklin Crafts Maui, have been announced and their prized art pieces are on display at the Queen Kaʻahumanu Shopping Center.

Queen Kaʻahumanu Center is proud to partner with Maui Matsuri to host the 23rd Annual Maui Matsuri Children’s Festival this Saturday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Center Court.

The 23rd annual Maui Matsuri is now accepting entries for its art contest from eligible students who can win up to $100 in cash prizes.

To kick off its 22nd annual Japanese Festival, Maui Matsuri plans to hold its Children’s Festival portion of the celebration at the Queen Kaʻahumanu Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 18.

Mise Kimono, which offers modern Japanese fashions with a touch of Hawaii influence, will celebrate its second anniversary at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center with a “Mise Matsuri” on March 3.

The Maui Matsuri Festival celebrated its 21st year at the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College campus on Saturday with saimin and natto eating contests, cosplay, taiko drum performances, food and craft vendors, cultural exhibitions and the iconic Community Obon Dance finale.

Maui Matsuri returns to the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College on Saturday, May 27 from 3 to 9 p.m., and will kick-off this Saturday, May 20 with Children’s Day at the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

With JCSM pushing back the 2021 Maui Matsuri Festival from May to November last year, and many participating organizations still regaining their pre-pandemic capacities, the decision was made to honor the perpetual theme of the Matsuri – Kodomo No Tame Ni (For the Sake of the Children) – and focus on a one-day event for children.

The Annual Maui Matsuri Art Contest, sponsored by House Mart Ben Franklin Crafts, is seeking entries from students in Grades K-12. The theme this year is Noboru, “To rise and move forward.”

The Japanese Cultural Society of Maui awarded the Asa Ellison Memorial Scholarship worth $1,750 to Leilah V. Eusebio of King Kekaulike High School for her efforts in perpetuating the Japanese culture and language.

Maui Matsuri organizers today announced the cancellation of their annual celebration which was set for May 2020. “Out of an abundance of caution, and out of respect for the many entertainers, vendors and sponsors, the planning committee felt it was important to make this decision early in order to prevent future fiscal and travel difficulties,” organizers said in an email announcement.
