After just over 10 months on the job, Deputy Maui Police Chief Charles Hank III is retiring. Maui’s Wade Maeda has been tapped to fill the spot.

With Halloween approaching, the Hawai’i Police Department is reminding the public to be aware of the dangers of fentanyl, which has been recovered by police during drug arrests across Hawaiʻi Island in recent months.

An indictment warrant was issued on Tuesday, Oct. 11, for three adults after a vehicle stop conducted last month by Crime Reduction Unit officers in Wailuku.

Police made an arrest in connection to a second degree robbery investigation reported at around 7:45 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2, at a parking lot located at 70 East Kaʻahumanu Avenue in Kahului.

A Lahaina man was arrested on kidnapping charges after he allegedly entered an occupied vehicle that was running and unlocked in the parking lot of the Kahului Shopping Center.

The 52-year-old suspect was charged with two counts each of kidnapping, first degree terroristic threatening, first degree robbery, and one count each of methamphetamine trafficking and first degree sex assault.

A 13-year veteran officer with the Maui Police Department was arrested today on suspicion of first degree sexual assault.

Hawai’i Island police have initiated a homicide investigation after finding the “lifeless body of an adult female” in the yard of a home in the Hawaiian Beaches subdivision, in the Puna District.

Officers conducted a traffic stop and detained a 15-year-old boy.   Police say investigators with the Juvenile Crime Prevention Division recovered a pellet gun and 1.35 grams of marijuana from the teen who was on a school bus in Kahului.

A five day warrant sweep conducted by the US Marshals Service in Maui County, netted the arrest of 22 individuals for a total of 70 outstanding warrants.

As of Aug. 24, 2022, the MPD Records Division had distributed 187 Concealed Carry Weapon license applications in 2022.  Department spokesperson Alana Pico said 13 of those 187 have been submitted to MPD for processing.  A single application was approved.  

After a day of deliberations, a guilty verdict has been reached in the second degree murder trial of Bernard Brown. The verdict was reached at 2:01 p.m. and was unanimous.

Defense attorney Randall Hironaka called the prosecution’s case a “witch-hunt.” Meantime, Deputy Prosecutor Jerry W. Hupp argued that “odd” activity, statements, “mistakes,” and “diversions” by Brown, point towards guilt.

After 35 witnesses and eight days of testimony since Aug. 1, closing statements from the state and defense are expected on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2022.

A suspect was being held on $6,000 bail after allegedly striking another man repeatedly with a metal stake during an argument on Saturday.

A Maui man was charged with attempted murder after a shooting in Haʻikū that left one man with a gunshot wound to the arm.

Locally, FBI agents identified and located seven adolescent victims during this operation that ran on Aug. 12, 2022.

A Kula man was arrested and held on $755,000 bail for allegedly opening fire at a Haʻikū home on Monday afternoon. Police say 55-year-old Shawn Medeiros allegedly shot numerous rounds at the home before fleeing.

Maui police have identified two “individuals of interest” after two suspicious reports Saturday night in which female pedestrians were reportedly followed by an SUV in West Maui, and threatened. In one case, the driver claimed to have a gun; and in the other incident, a gun was pointed at the victim, police said.

Maui police have launched a murder investigation following the discovery of a man found deceased at a beach volleyball court in Kīhei.
