Hawaiian Music Series features Liz Morales and Jordan Soon, March 30

Liz Morales, founder of the wahine trio Ahumanu, and Jordan Soon, singer-songwriter from Wailuku, will perform at this month’s Hawaiian Music Series on the front lawn of the Baldwin Home museum in Lahaina. Now in its 15th year, the free event will be held on Thursday, March 30 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Movie at the Old Prison features screening of Hawaiian Soul, March 25

Hawaiian Soul, a narrative short film dedicated to Hawaiian activist and musician George Jarret Helm Jr., will be screened at this month’s “Movie at the Old Prison” on the lawn of the Old Prison. The free event will be held on Saturday, March 25 at 7 p.m. Director/writer/producer ʻĀina Paikai and executive co-producer Lincoln Wong will be guest speakers.

Honoring Queen Kaʻahumanu Center’s namesake with protocol and music, March 17

March 17 marks the birthday of Queen Kaʻahumanu – a beloved Kuhina Nui, champion of women’s rights, and female surfer.  To commemorate her birthday, Queen Kaʻahumanu Center will celebrate with mele, hula and protocol by ʻAhahui Kaʻahumanu Society followed by Kamaʻāina Nights live local music by Kamalei Kawaʻa.

A team from HP Baldwin High School on Maui has won a trip to Oʻahu to showcase their winning Mikoshi Shrine Design at the Honolulu Festival. The event returns three years after it was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19 precautions.

Celebrating Prince Kūhiō at Queen Kaʻahumanu Center, March 24

The Prince Kūhiō Maui Ho’olaule’a returns to Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center Friday, March 24, 2023, from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and features free keiki activities, hands-on exhibits, Hawaiian music and hula.

Hui Noʻeau presents retrospective exhibition featuring Maui artist Eddie Flotte

Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center presents “Eddie Flotte: These are the Moments of ‘Those Were the Days,’” a retrospective exhibition featuring the work of celebrated Maui watercolor artist Eddie Flotte. The exhibition will be on display from March 24 to May 12, 2023, with an opening reception to be held on Friday, March 24 from 5 to 7 p.m.

New Zealand’s Atamira Dance Company presents Māori contemporary dance on Maui

The Maui Arts & Cultural Center presents New Zealand’s Atamira Dance Company, the world’s foremost creator and presenter of Māori contemporary dance theater, with the Maui premiere of the evening-length Te Wheke.

Artists sought for public work to be featured on new Wailuku Municipal Parking Structure

A SMALL TOWN * BIG ART Request for Expression of Interest (REOI) recently went live for orientation-based artwork at five sites within the Wailuku Municipal Parking Structure, which is currently under construction in the heart of Wailuku town. The art will function as directional signage and offer a wayfinding element that draws people to entry and exit points, a news release said. Application deadline is March 26.

Hula kiʻi, rare Hawaiian dance of carved puppetry, to be showcased Sunday at MACC

Hula kiʻi, a rare Hawaiian ritual dance of carved puppetry images, will be showcased from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday at Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s McCoy Studio Theater.

Open House on the Halau of ʻOiwi Art project in Wailuku, Feb. 27

An informational Open House on the Hawaiian cultural center in Wailuku, called “Hālau of ʻŌiwi Art,” will be held on Monday, Feb. 27, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Maui Academy of Performing Art’s Promenade Food Court located at 2050 Main Street in Wailuku.
