Live Fire Training scheduled for Nov. 18, 21 and 22; Training on Nov. 15 postponed due to Fire Weather Watch
The Maui Fire Department will be conducting live fire training on Nov. 18, 21 and 22 as part of its 40th recruit class. In light of the latest forecast info from the National Weather Service indicating that a Fire Weather Watch will be up for all leeward areas of all islands on Friday; the live fire training planned for this Friday, Nov. 15 has been postponed.
Draft environmental assessment details Waiʻale Road extension project
A draft environmental assessment has been completed for an 1.6-mile, southerly extension of Waiʻale Road that would, literally, pave the way for the Waikapū Country Town development.
The new 80-foot-wide road would provide access to 1,433 homes, including 500 affordable units, as part of the master-planned Waikapū Country Town development, according to the draft document.

55th Annual Maui Marathon to return to West Maui in 2025
The Maui Marathon Committee today announced the return of the Maui Marathon to Kāʻanapali in 2025. The 55th annual event, which includes the 26.2-mile race along with the Half Marathon, 10k and 5k Run/Walks, will take place on April 27, 2025.
Shooting investigation underway: Maui man dead after crash in Waikapū
Maui police have launched a shooting investigation after the death of a motorist in Waikapū early Monday morning. Police have since identified the victim as Shawn Lewis, 42, of Lahaina.
Lewis was reportedly driving along the Honoapiʻilani Highway in Waikapū early Monday morning when he crashed shortly after midnight on Sept. 16, 2024, near Waiolu Place, forcing the closure of the highway for five hours while police conducted an investigation.
The cause of death is pending autopsy.

The Maui Police Department is currently conducting an active investigation into a deadly incident overnight that forced the closure of the Honoapiʻilani Highway in Waikapū for five hours.

The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation advises highway users that crews will be completing striping of the new speed tables on Honoapi‘ilani Highway (Route 30) in the vicinity of Maui Tropical Plantation and Kolo Place.

Maui Live Fire Training scheduled May 1-30
The Maui Fire Department will be conducting wildland live fire training, May 1-30 (weekends excluded) as part of our ongoing incumbent training program. This training will be conducted in Waikapū, across from the Maui Tropical Plantation. Smoke associated with this training will be visible between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. each day.

Maui Marathon to honor West Maui as the Lahaina Town Memorial Run
The 54th annual Maui Marathon scheduled for April 21 will look a lot different this year. After devastating fires impacted Lahaina and Kula, the Maui Marathon that historically stretched from Puʻunēnē to Kāʻanapali will host a new route and only include the half marathon, 10k Run/Walk, and 5k Run/Walk. For 2024, the 26.2-mile race is canceled, and the start/finish line for the other distances is moved to the Maui Tropical Plantation in Wailuku.
