Probable cause was found Thursday during a preliminary hearing for 40-year-old Congressional candidate Kirill Basin of Kīhei, who is accused of two counts of first degree terroristic threatening for an incident reported Saturday at Keawakapu Beach in South Maui.

A 40-year-old Kīhei man identified as Congressional candidate Kirill Basin, was placed under arrest again, this time for a terroristic threatening incident reported on Saturday at a South Maui beach.

In response to recent news reports involving an individual who has publicly announced a candidacy for Hawaiʻi’s Second Congressional District, the Democratic Party of Hawaiʻi and its Maui County Committee issued a statement Tuesday, jointly reaffirming “a simple but essential principle: political violence, intimidation, and harassment have no place in Hawaiʻi.”

The Maui County Council gave final approval Thursday to a $1.6 billion fiscal year 2027 budget, sending the spending plan to Mayor Richard Bissen’s desk, but not before adding $50,000 for Maui County campus security.

A 40-year-old Kīhei man identified as Congressional candidate Kirill Basin, was placed under arrest Friday for first degree Terroristic Threatening after he allegedly entered a county building off of Main Street in Wailuku while brandishing a firearm and engaged in a verbal altercation with county employees, police said.

The County’s Maui Emergency Management Agency, in coordination with County staff and contracted partners, will begin removing hazardous wildfire risks from County-owned parcels near a public school and a church in Wailuku on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2025. The Waiʻale Road area has had 13 fires so far this year, according to the County of Maui Department of Fire and Public Safety.

Maui police have identified the fallen officer from Friday night’s fatal shooting in Pāʻia as Officer Suzanne O. Officer O began her service with the Maui Police Department in 2020, first working in the Kīhei Patrol District before moving to the Wailuku Patrol District in December 2021. 

The Maui Police Department is mourning the loss of one of their own following an officer-involved shooting in Pāʻia, Friday night. Police say the caller reported that an unknown individual had trespassed onto the property and fired a weapon at them. Upon arrival, officers encountered the armed suspect, who discharged a firearm, striking one of the responding officers.

Maui police will increase presence in and around Baldwin High School today following an alleged threat towards the campus.

Maui police made two arrests and launched an investigation after a woman suffered a gunshot wound during an encounter at a Wailuku park early Monday morning.

Two teen girls were arrested on Tuesday afternoon following an investigation into an alleged threat at ʻĪao Intermediate School.

A 13-year-old girl was arrested for Terroristic Threatening in connection with a threat at Kalama Intermediate School. The investigation remains ongoing and active for the other affected campuses where alleged threats occurred.

A Maui man was arrested after allegedly stealing a vehicle from an elderly visitor in Makawao and driving the vehicle in the wrong direction on the Hāna Highway before crashing.

The 52-year-old suspect was charged with two counts each of kidnapping, first degree terroristic threatening, first degree robbery, and one count each of methamphetamine trafficking and first degree sex assault.

Officers conducted a traffic stop and detained a 15-year-old boy.   Police say investigators with the Juvenile Crime Prevention Division recovered a pellet gun and 1.35 grams of marijuana from the teen who was on a school bus in Kahului.

Police say a suspect allegedly shot several rounds in the victim’s direction, at which time the victim left the residence.   

A suspect was being held on $6,000 bail after allegedly striking another man repeatedly with a metal stake during an argument on Saturday.

A Kula man was arrested and held on $755,000 bail for allegedly opening fire at a Haʻikū home on Monday afternoon. Police say 55-year-old Shawn Medeiros allegedly shot numerous rounds at the home before fleeing.

Maui police arrested a Haiʻkū man after visitors reported a harassment at Kamaʻole Beach Park III involving the alleged use of a chainsaw to damage their rental vehicle.

Maui police have identified two “individuals of interest” after two suspicious reports Saturday night in which female pedestrians were reportedly followed by an SUV in West Maui, and threatened. In one case, the driver claimed to have a gun; and in the other incident, a gun was pointed at the victim, police said.
