The Maui Film Festival kicks off on Wednesday with a one-of-a-kind Stardust Cinema which includes 11 feature film premieres taking place June 28  to July 2 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului.

The film is entertaining, a how-to primer for regenerative agriculture and a powerful call to action to fix our food system. Common Ground features appearances and narration by Laura Dern, Jason Momoa, Rosario Dawson, Ian Somerhalder and Woody Harrelson. It is the highly anticipated follow up film to Kiss the Ground.

Multi-Nā Hōkū Hanohano award winner Sean Naʻauao is the concert headliner at The Shops at Wailea on June 30. The live performance will take place from 5:30-7 p.m. and benefit Hospice Maui, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing care to local families experiencing a bereavement state. 

ʻAinakea, a play about Maui in the 1950s, debuts at the Historic ʻĪao Theater on July 10 at 6:30 p.m.

The Makawao Rodeo Parade returned in full flair on Saturday after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic. Spectators were greeted in true paniolo style with mounted and walking units, and popular stick horse races for keiki. The 2023 Parade Grand Marshal, Donna Otsuka directed the keiki pāʻū unit, and Duane Hamamura was the event’s Special Honoree this year. 

This month’s popular Hawaiian Music Series will be held on June 29 at 6 p.m. on the Baldwin Home Museum lawn, and will feature young Hawaiian music talent, Wehilei.

Explore the world of detective fiction set in postwar Hawai’i as Scott Kikkawa takes the stage at the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center on July 1.

The Makawao Rodeo Parade is back after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic. The parade features mounted and walking units, classic cars, and the 2023 Parade Grand Marshal is Donna Otsuka.

The festival honors: Annie Gonzalez, starring as ‘Judy Montañez’ in Flamin’ Hot, with the Rising Star Award; and Yara Shahidi, starring as ‘Tinker Bell’ in Disney’s live action film Peter Pan & Wendy, will receive the Shining Star Award.

Maui’s Adaptations Dance Theater will commemorate its milestone anniversary in August with the return of the “Bring it Home” artist residency and dance concert series, featuring collaborations between Maui-raised dance artists and resident dancers.

Black Coral, a documentary that tells the stories of black coral divers in Maui, will be screened at “Movies at the Old Prison” on Saturday, June 24 at 7 p.m. at the Old Lahaina Prison.

Kīhei’s 4th Friday event returns to Azeka Shopping Center on June 23, featuring food, art and live music.

The free Aloha Sunset Concert returns June 24 with Sunny Kalama and Brian Santana.

Henry Kapono, a Grammy-nominated musician and 21-time Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award Winner, will be participating in this year’s Make Music Day, a worldwide music celebration held in over 1,000 cities on June 21.

Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center welcomes Kūikawā, a young trio from Maui, to Kama‘āina Nights on June 16 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The Maui Arts & Cultural Center presents Kumu Kahua Theatre’s production of Folks You Meet At Longs, July 22-23 at the McCoy Studio Theater. Tickets go on sale Tuesday, June 13 at 10 a.m.
