The youngest musician ever nominated for a Grammy Award in the jazz category is performing at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center Thursday, May 26, starting at 7:30 p.m.

Nonprofit Art Maui, a 43-year-old organization dedicated to Maui County visual arts, said that its future depends on finding a “robust and valiant” board of directors.

To kick off Memorial Day weekend, The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua hosts a special performance by Honolulu-based musician Tavana. He will perform at the resort’s newly reimagined Alaloa Lounge on Friday, May 27 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. 

The festival of cuisines and wine begins at three respective locations in Kāʻanapali, Maui starting Oct. 21, continues at two resort locations on Hawaiʻi Island on Oct. 28-29, then moves to six locations Oʻahu from Nov. 3 through Nov. 6.

The nonprofit conservation organization Pacific Whale Foundation plans to hold its 6th Annual World Whale Film Festival on World Ocean Day on June 8.

The proposed multi-million project is described as a “first of its kind” and the “largest investment by any county or the state to establish a permanent place for hula and associated ʻōiwi arts.”

Maui Preparatory Academy invites the community to a showcase of its visual, performing, and STEM arts program on Friday, May 20 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. The annual event is presented in a relaxed open house format throughout the Maui Prep campus in Nāpili.

Maui’s own MAOLI, performs in a concert under the stars on Friday, June 17 in the A&B Amphitheater and Yokouchi Pavilion at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the concert starts at 6:30 p.m.

The Nisei Veterans Memorial Center hosts a book signing and lecture with Dr. Gail Okawa on Saturday, May 21 at 1:30 p.m. at the Stanley Izumigawa Resource Center on the NVMC campus.

Three professionally written plays will round out the festival: The Red Coat by John Patrick Shanley, Theater X’s Burger King comedy Peace Negotiations, and a 10-minute musical by Greg Edwards titled, The Almost In-Laws.

Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Ignace “Iggy” Jang will be the solo violinist and later serve as conductor in performances this weekend with the Maui Chamber Orchestra at the ʻĪao Theatre. The Orchestra is emerging from a two-year hiatus prompted by the COVID pandemic.
