Maui youth wrestling team wins Hawaiʻi State Wrestling Championship
MTS-Nakamura Wrestling of Wailuku took first overall at this past weekend’s 2024 Hawaiʻi State Wrestling Championship, held annually at the Lahaina Civic Center. The event drew 19 wrestling clubs statewide and nearly 500 wrestlers.

The 20th Annual Ian Walsh Menehune Mayhem, a free two day surf contest for Maui’s youth ages 15 years old and younger, is taking place at Hoʻokipa Beach Park all-day Saturday and Sunday.
‘Molokini Mantas’ break record for fastest Maui-Molokini-Maui channel swim
On Saturday morning, a special pod of “Mantas” was sighted in the waters of Molokini, three miles off Maui’s southern coast. Dubbed the “Molokini Mantas,” the group of nine Hawaiʻi swimmers were en route back to Maui, and upon reaching the Maui shore, they had set a new record for the fastest channel swim from Maluaka to and around Molokini and back.

First look: 2024 Maui Marathon’s ‘Lahaina Town Memorial Run’ and 10K and 5K run/walk
The 54th annual Maui Marathon’s “Lahaina Town Memorial Run” got off to a smooth start this morning as hundreds of runners set off on a shorter half-marathon from the Puʻunēnē Sugar Mill, and 10K and 5K run/walks from the Maui Tropical Plantation. All races started before 6 a.m., and were set to conclude at the Maui Tropical Plantation in Waikapū. Live results are posted online.

Aloha Stadium on track to open for 2028 UH football season; priority listed offerors selected
Today, the New Aloha Stadium Entertainment District announced that it has selected two priority-listed offerors that will be considered to develop and operate the new Aloha Stadium and surrounding entertainment district as one integrated public-private-partnership project. The selection and notification of the priority-listed offerors has occurred earlier than scheduled, marking the end of the qualifications phase and commencement of the proposals phase, and keeping the new Aloha Stadium on track to open for the 2028 University of Hawaiʻi football season.

12 Maui students receive scholarships through Sentry Insurance Foundation
Twelve students on the island of Maui will receive scholarships—totaling $25,000 altogether—in 2024 through the Sentry Insurance Foundation’s Sentry Scholars program. To date, Sentry has provided $93,000 to Maui students attending the University of Hawaiʻi system and affiliated community colleges.

University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa public health researchers are collecting data from outrigger canoe paddlers to determine canoe paddling’s metabolic equivalents. These show how many calories or energy expenditure a person burns when engaged in a physical activity.

About 1,300 Maui residents and visitors ran and walked in last weekend’s 13th annual Maui 5K, raising nearly $70,000 for Maui Nui schools.
