The County of Maui Department of Water Supply launched an additional webpage to provide the public with information on the new method for calculating water use for water service requests, effective Jan. 1, 2026.

County of Maui DWS launches 2026 student water conservation contests

The County of Maui Department of Water Supply is inviting Maui County students to participate in its 14th Annual Water Conservation Poster Contest for kindergarten through grade 6 and its 8th Annual Water Source Protection Video Contest for grades 7 through 12. Entries are due by March 27, 2026, and prizes will be given for top submissions.

Shaw Street temporary closure in Lahaina for service repairs

Shaw Street in Lahaina will be closed in both directions between Front St. and Waineʻe St. beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 6, 2026. The Water Department reports the closure is due to service repairs.

Water department to implement new water-use and meter-sizing method starting Jan. 1

Beginning Jan. 1, 2026, in accordance with Ordinance 5759 adopted by the Maui County Council, the County of Maui Department of Water Supply (DWS) will implement a new method for projecting water demand and sizing water meters that focuses on daily water usage instead of the Hunter Curve Method, which was based on the number of plumbing fixtures—such as toilets or showers—in a building. The new method will apply to building permit applications and applications for new or additional water use.

Following recent rainfall and ongoing community water conservation, the County of Maui Department of Water Supply is suspending the Stage 1 Central and South Maui water shortage, effective immediately and until further notice.

Upcountry Maui water shortage downgraded to Stage 1

Following recent rainfall that improved surface water flows and replenished reservoirs, the County of Maui Department of Water Supply (DWS) is suspending the Stage 2 Upcountry water shortage and downgrading it to a Stage 1, effective immediately and until further notice.

Upcountry water source development is focus of community meetings, Oct. 9 and 28

Council Vice-Chair Yuki Lei Sugimura announced today that two community meetings focused on Upcountry water source development will be held on Thursday, Oct. 9, and Tuesday, Oct. 28, both beginning at 6 p.m. at the Hannibal Tavares Community Center in Pukalani.

Water service outage in Hāna on Sept. 18, 2025 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There is a water service outage due to mainline break in Hāna, on Hāna Hwy, from Koali Bridge to St. Peters Church, affecting 60 homes and 10 standpipes. The Department of Water Supply reports the outage is from in effect from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2025.

Maui DWS to use backup water for Upcountry system starting in early September

Due to existing and projected water shortages, the County of Maui Department of Water Supply will introduce backup supply to the Upcountry water system that serves Upper and Lower Kula, Makawao, Pukalani, Hāliʻimaile and Haʻikū on or around Sept. 5, 2025.

County of Maui Department of Water Supply is continuing its community meetings on the future of Maui island’s drinking water supply with six in-person events in May. DWS is partnering with national nonprofit US Water Alliance to facilitate the meetings, which will help shape Maui’s water future.

Staff from the Maui Department of Water Supply recently completed an analysis of maximum reliable capacity for the Central System. Applications for additional water service will be limited to 1,200 gallons per day unless exempted by the rules.
