Storm repair work temporarily paused on section of South Kīhei Road; Daytime closures resume May 28

Storm repair work is temporarily paused on South Kīhei Road between Ohukai Road and Kūlanihākoʻi Street pending the delivery of materials, according to the County of Maui Department of Public Works Highways Division.

DPW traffic advisory: Parts of Makawao Ave. to be closed on weekends until June 21

The County of Maui Department of Public Works reconstruction project will require weekend closures of both lanes on the next sections of Makawao Avenue. The second phase of paving begins Saturday, May 16, and continues through Sunday, June 21, 2026.

Closure to begin half-hour later for section of South Kīhei Road undergoing storm repair

Starting today, Tuesday, May 12, 2026, the closure of South Kīhei Road between Ohukai Road and Kūlanihākoʻi Street will begin a half-hour later at 7:30 a.m. to better accommodate morning traffic, according to the County of Maui Department of Public Works.

Section of South Kīhei Road to close for storm repair work from April 20-June 20

South Kīhei Road will be closed between Ohukai Road and Kūlanihākoʻi Street starting at 8 a.m. on Monday, April 20. The closure will remain in place around the clock, weather permitting, through June 20, 2026, for repairs following recent Kona storms, according to the County of Maui Department of Public Works.

Portion of South Kīhei Road to be closed for Kona storm repairs starting Wednesday

South Kīhei Road will be closed between North Kīhei Road and Ohukai Road starting at 8 a.m. Wednesday, April 8, and continuing through April 15, 2026, to repair damage from recent kona storms, according to the County of Maui Department of Public Works.

MEMA, County Parks and Recreation and the American Red Cross will begin proactively opening shelters across Maui today. Shelters will provide cots, food, and water. Bring bedding, essential supplies and any necessary medications. Pets are allowed only if they are in crates. The length of shelter operations will depend on the severity of the weather. Additional shelter locations may open if needed.

Shelters closing today as weather conditions improve

Emergency shelters at Maui High School Gym in Kahului and Hāna High School Cafeteria were closed today, March 16, and remaining shelters in Lahaina and South Maui were set to close at 5 p.m. today, after being opened last week before a prolonged kona storm brought heavy rain, flooding and high wind to Maui County and the rest of the state.

Pre-fire Front Street Improvements Project continues; work completion slated for May
