Interior Dept. announces $1M in NATIVE Act funding for Native Hawaiian organizations

The Department of the Interior’s Office of Native Hawaiian Relations estimates that it will award eight HŌʻIHI grants ranging between $50,000 and $200,000. Native Hawaiian Organizations may use grant funding for up to three years from the date of award.

An estimated $3.1 million has been allocated to The Coral Reef Alliance for the restoration and strengthening resilience of Maui Nui Reefs. Thereʻs also $804,000 allocated to the Hawaiian Islands Land Trust for the restoration of loʻi kalo at the Waiheʻe Coastal Dunes and Wetlands Refuge on Maui.

Operation Keiki Shield on Maui nets nine arrests

The joint Operation Keiki Shield 17 law enforcement operation netted nine arrests on the island of Maui over a three day effort conducted Friday April 14 through Sunday, April 16, 2023. Two of the individuals identified were non-US citizens from the mainland. Police say the individuals were arrested on charges related to internet-facilitated sexual offenses against children. All individuasl were being held on $100,000 bail each.

US Representative Jill Tokuda (HI-02) announced four additional town hall meetings across Hawaiʻi’s Second Congressional District to hear from constituents. Maui’s unemployment rate rises to 3.4% in March 2023

Maui’s unemployment rate increased to 3.4% in March of 2023, up from 3.2% in February. When compared to last year, Maui County’s unemployment rate was up from 3.3%, and Maui Island’s rate was up from 3.2%.
