Joshua Hargrove, who led The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Kāʻanapali, through the 2023 Maui wildfires, has been named general manager of two Waikīkī resorts owned by Marriott International. He currently chairs the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association and previously served as chairman of the statewide Hawaiʻi Lodging & Tourism Association.

Water cloudiness caused by sediment exceeds state health standards at every monitored site across leeward Maui, with the most dramatic increases in North Kīhei, where turbidity has climbed sharply since 2021 to levels that threaten roughly 1,500 acres of coral reef.

The search for a missing snorkeler off of Kāʻanapali ended at nightfall on Monday after three days.  The missing man, John Weems, 75, of North Carolina was reported missing late Friday afternoon, when he failed to return from snorkeling off Kāʻanapali Beach.

Runners and walkers from across the US and beyond took off at sunrise from staggered start lines in the Maui Marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K races in Kāʻanapali on Sunday. Participants traveled the scenic out-and-back course, passing energetic aid stations before finishing among cheering spectators.

Organizers of the Maui Marathon have announced that the race’s start and finish line has been relocated to the mauka lane of Kāʻanapali Parkway, directly across from Whalers Village, to accommodate ongoing construction on a nearby water system.

Elite distance runner Jordan Hogan, one of the most accomplished American marathoners of the past decade, will take part in the 56th annual Maui Marathon race weekend, including community meet-and-greet opportunities and competition in the half marathon.

Sections of the right northbound lane of Honoapi‘ilani Highway between Fleming Road and the intersection at Kāʻanapali Parkway/Hālelo Street may be intermittently closed from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., from Monday, March 9 to Friday, March 13 and from Monday, March 16 to Friday, March 20, for roving Hawaiian Telcom utility work. One lane will be open for through traffic.

Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa announced the appointment of Stefanie Kaplan as Associate Director of Leisure Sales. In this role Kaplan will direct the resort’s leisure sales strategy, strengthen key travel partnerships and expand market presence for the oceanfront destination on Kāʻanapali Beach.

The state Department of Transportation will be conducting road work this week that will result in lane closures at various locations. Lane closure schedules may change at any time without further notice. All projects are weather permitting.

As whale sightings rise across the islands heading into peak whale season, Hula Grill Kāʻanapali will begin offering Whale Talks at its restaurant in Whalers Village on Tuesdays at 11 a.m. in February and March.

Maui’s Elizabeth Kamaile Kahailihauwelo Kekahuna, representing Hālau Keʻalaokamaile under the guidance of Nā Kumu Hula Kealiʻi Reichel and Henohea Kāne, was announced as the winner of the 33rd annual Hula O Nā Keiki competition at Outrigger Kā’anapali Beach Resort.

The West Maui service area includes Lahaina, Kāʻanapali, Kahana, Māhinahina, Nāpili-Honokōwai, and Honokōhau. West Maui is experiencing continued dry weather and lack of rainfall. Therefore, the existing water shortage is being upgraded to a Stage 2 for West Maui until water source levels are adequate to meet demand. 

Debris transport, the Wahikuli sewer project, and Hoʻokumu Hou housing programs will be discussed at the upcoming Lahaina Community Meeting, set to take place at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the Lahaina Intermediate School cafeteria.
