Maui Crime Over 10 Years: Violent Crime Up 52%; Property Crime Down 20%
Police say Maui County’s total index crime rate in 2019 was the lowest on record since the state began collecting data in 1975. The number of reported crimes increased for five Index Crime categories: robbery (67 cases), +26.4%; aggravated assault (271 cases), +3%; theft (3,746 incidents), +2.9%; and arson (128 cases), +4.9%.
Police Investigation East Līpoa Road, Kīhei
Maui police have closed a portion of East Līpoa Road in Kīhei between Liloa Road and Kupalaiki Loop (makai) due to an ongoing police investigation. Motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible.
Update: California Man Agrees to Return Home After Arrest on Maui for Quarantine Violation
The Maui Police Department is seeking the public’s help in locating 36-year-old Joaquin Pelayo of California. Police say Pelayo has allegedly violated the mandatory 14-day travel quarantine by indicating he would be staying at a Kīhei home, however he has not been located.

Maui Police Launch Murder Investigation into Death of Man in Lahaina
Maui police have launched a second degree murder investigation into the death of a man found unresponsive on a side street in Lahaina on Thursday morning. Upon arrival to 535 Waineʻe Street, Lahaina Patrol Officers found the man on the shoulder side of the roadway. Police say it was reported the male appeared to have been assaulted and was bleeding.

The Maui Police Department continues their search for John Kahalehoe III, who also goes by the name of “John Boy.” Authorities say he is wanted for several outstanding felony arrest warrants. Kahalehoe is described as 27-years-old, 5 feet 6 inches tall, 150 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

Colorado Woman Arrested on Maui for Violating 14-Day Travel Quarantine
Maui police arrested a 23-year-old Colorado woman overnight on two counts of violating Emergency Rules and Orders. On Saturday, May 16, 2020 at about 1:40 a.m., police were dispatched to a residence in Kula, regarding a female later identified as Tara Trunfio, who was allegedly on the property and refusing to leave.
