Two-hour Kaʻahumanu Avenue closure set Saturday morning for Pā‘ū Parade
Motorists should plan to avoid Kaʻahumanu Avenue between Lunalilo Street and Kahului Beach Road on Saturday morning. The road will be closed in both directions from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. for the 2025 Nā Kamehameha Commemorative Pā‘ū Parade, according to the Department of Transportation.

Episode 26 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption began at approximately 1:40 a.m. HST on Friday, June 20, 2025, with lava fountains and flows erupting from the north vent. Within less than a half hour, at 2:10 a.m., lava fountains had reached heights of over 1,000 feet, according to a volcanic activity summary issued by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

Two Maui men injured in alleged assault in Māʻalaea
Two men suffered injuries in an alleged assault reported early Saturday morning in Māʻalaea, police said. The victims, a 24-year-old Kīhei man and a 62-year-old Lahaina man were allegedly assaulted by a group of three to four unknown males near Slip 22 at Māʻalaea Boat Harbor.

Skunk captured at Kakaʻako Waterfront Park
A live skunk was captured Wednesday night at Kaka‘ako Waterfront Park by Honolulu police after they responded to a call reporting that a skunk was running around the park near Keawe Street. Inspectors took custody of the skunk and it has been humanely euthanized to test for the rabies virus.

Episode 26 of ongoing Kīlauea eruption reaches impressive lava fountain heights of more than 1,000 feet within first 30 minutes
National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu said local doppler radar indicated that bursts of volcanic ash were erupting up to 20,000 feet and low level trade winds were expected to push it toward the west-southwest over portions of Kaʻū and Highway 11 on the Big Island, resulting in a special weather statement being issued.

Big Island woman arrested after traffic crash in which possible pedestrian boyfriend badly injured
22-year-old Alaina Kainoa-Aukai of Ocean View, who police said was displaying signs of impairment at the scene of the crash, also allegedly kicked an officer while being arrested the night of June 17.
Mammal hunting to open in Waimea area on Big Island in July
The season will continue through Aug. 31, excluding Aug. 27-28, when the area will be closed for ungulate management operations.
